This fall was the first time I’d been able to decorate for a season in over four years. I was excited and overwhelmed. Reducing our possessions with every move didn’t leave me with much to work with, so aside from a few artificial pumpkins, I was starting from scratch.
I put together three different mood boards for inspiration and decided to incorporate all of them. I started with a traditional theme and added a few purple and blue elements.
For someone like me who doesn’t like a bunch of random things lying around, it can be challenging to decorate without making the space feel cluttered. Here’s a detailed look into how I transformed our home for fall.
Entryway
Our main living space upstairs consists of our entryway, kitchen, and great room in one open space.
Using a mid-modern wood console table in our unofficial entryway as my blank canvas, I started by building a base of real and artificial pumpkins and gourds.
I kept the tabletop fairly neat and only added a few items for balance and joy: A few old books that belonged to my mom, stacked and topped with custom wood coasters my best friend gifted me with, a vintage-inspired radio and Bluetooth speaker, and a distressed terracotta vase filled with muted yellow, orange, cream, and blue faux florals.
The last addition was a piece of artwork I created by photoshopping one of my photos to make it look more like a painting. I ordered the print as a poster and framed it myself.
Working my way clockwise, the next touch of fall I added was to our front door. I added a wreath that included all the colors of my mood board, hung using a scrap piece of twine, and my easy, damage-free wreath hanging hack.
Our existing doormat was a neutral rug with a subtle modern design, so it worked perfectly.
Kitchen
Moving into the kitchen, I swapped a few items on our open shelves and added a few styled pieces to the counters.
First, I used my DIY-made-over Oprah tea set on a wooden serving tray at the end of the counter. Onto the shelves, I sprinkled in a few of the DIY-made-over ceramic pumpkins with a candle I already had on hand.
I try to include function when styling a space, but sometimes, there just isn’t any and that’s okay!
If you follow The Holub House on Instagram, you might remember seeing the vase pictured on the left in one of my Lowe’s hauls. I removed the artificial flowers that it came with and replaced them with stems I bought at Target.
On the opposite shelf, the only change I made was I replaced my glass mixing bowls with a glass trifle stand filled with fresh plums.
Keeping to the simple styling, for the countertop, I added a few cooking utensils to a glass canister I picked up at a thrift store, displayed one of my favorite recipe books, and placed a small charcuterie board against the tile.
Snaking my way back towards the great room is our island. I filled small amber vases with a few of the same flowers from the entryway and elevated them with a footed serving platter in the middle of the island.
Because you can see the lake when looking from the kitchen, I didn’t want to add anything that would be distracting or obstruct the view.
Great Room
I placed the remaining DIY-made-over ceramic pumpkins with two small faux purple potted flowers and an inexpensive desk lamp on the side table, leaving enough room for Andy’s morning coffee mug when it’s too chilly to sit on the deck.
I fell in love with these pillowcases and ordered them instantly. I knew they would be the perfect way to tie everything together and the fact they could be used all year sealed the decision.
To cozy up our old, cheap barrel chair that doubles as one of Callie’s favorite spots, I tossed a chunky knitted mustard yellow throw blanket over it. I layered a rusty orange colored blanket over the existing olive green blanket for an extra punch of texture.
From the minute you walk through our door, I hope you feel fall, but just enough. Sometimes it’s hard to find the balance of just enough without overdoing it, but through a lot of trial and error, I adore our house’s first fall look.
